history

Nov 1999

"Castel" is incorporated in New York. The company name is chosen after a village in France "Castellaras" meaning "The Castle of a beautiful place".

2000

Castel's modest beginnings were located in a home office in New York City. In the Spring of 2000, after much organization and hardwork, the first Castel collection was launched in six US showrooms. Castel's business model was to have its supplier carry and maintain inventory and drop ship using express courier companies to deliver the fabrics anywhere in the US within 5 business days. Castel created a warehouse for samples to better service customers.
Castel launched its second collection in September 2000. The business was run and managed by the two owners.

2001-2005

Castel grows to nine US showrooms and adds four new European suppliers/partners. Castel continues to offer two new collections per year. Customer service and fast delivery remain a key focus for the company. The inception of a customized business solution was developed to manage orders, audit freight, and offer real time reporting. Castel strives to even further improve communication, logistics, and delivery times. The headquarters move from a home office to a small studio. Its first official employee is hired.

2005-2009

Castel adds 5 more multiline showrooms to its distribution to total 14. The company moves to larger space and adds 3 employees, including a Sales and Marketing Director. Castel's proprietary customized application moves to a web based business solution and continues to be developed and proves to be an important attribute to the success of the company. Despite market challenges, Castel continues to grow.

2010- 2014

Castel hires its first overseas supplier liaison to ensure excellent customer service. Castel begins to export outside the US and expands its US distribution to 16 multi-line showrooms. Castel expands and opens a back office location in Brooklyn Heights NY. The company continues to evaluate industry practices and trends and enhances its system to respond to changing needs, including the creation of locally based inventory. A new website is launched offering new features to improve service, communication and marketing.

2015 - Present

Castel continues to grow its fabric offering by incorporating AKA-CASTEL as a label into the collection. The comapny grows it social media presences by developing an inspirational blog and creates a solid following on Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook. Castel establishes a new sample warehouse in Wilton CT and moves its offices to Verandah PL in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. A back office and shop open its doors at 385 Henry Street in March 2016 where the public can buy one of a kind finds and accessories. Ultra creative window displays attract passers by and social media followers. A Sales Director is hired to build national sales and bring Castel to the next level.  A new website is launched, offering Professionals and public guests an opportunity to interact online with Castel.

OWNER

Stephane Silverman is the founder, owner, and President of Castel. Stephane's parents were the US Presidents of the venerable French textile houses, Manuel Canovas and Boussac. While forging his own path, Stephane studied economics and renewable resources in graduate school. After broadening his skill set, he became sales director at Manuel Canovas and also managed export for the large textile firm, P/Kaufmann. Having a very entrepreneurial spirit, in the year 2000 he struck out and started his own fabric company using knowledge from his previous jobs, but also bringing a fresh approach to the industry. He continues to blaze new trails in the interior design and fabric business through a constant stream of new ideas challenging the status quo. The result has manifested itself in a web based software system to manage client orders, logistics and business flow associated to the many details of the industry. Stephane can often be heard saying "It's not just fabrics..."
Stephane has many interests that have led him to the top of mountains, including Aconcagua in Argentina, to the finish line of many marathons and also competitive sailing.   He lives in Brooklyn with his wife Laura (Castel Design Director) and his three children Zoe, Olivia and James.  He still maintains that his greatest achievement is the founding and steering at the helm of Castel.
